Idol Group Big Bang Tops Yearly Album Chart

The five-member idol group Big Bang once again nabbed the number one and two spots on a yearly music chart released by Hanteo.

According to the company, Big Bang’s first album, which contains the group’s hit song “Lies,” took the number one spot with sales of 87,000 copies, while the group’s second album with the hit song “Last Goodbye” took the number two spot with sales of 81,000 copies. Despite the ongoing slump in the album market, the sales of the two albums put together have exceeded 168,000 copies.

Big Bang’s live album “The Great” took the 61th spot on the chart while its first studio album and first single reached the 39th and 96th spots, respectively. The top 100 chart included a total of five Big Bang albums.

Meanwhile, Big Bang recently completed its ‘Global Warning Tour’ concert in Wonju on May 10th. The group will continue with the concert tour in Daegu on May 24 and in Seoul from June 21 to 22.

Super Junior-M Debuts in China

Super Junior-M, a sub-group of popular boy band Super Junior, is making its debut in China, Yonhap News reported.

SM Entertainment, one of Korea’s largest entertainment agencies, is hoping the new group Super Junior-M will make inroads in the Chinese market.

Super Junior-M on Tuesday released the music video for “U,” the first single off their Chinese-language album. The group also made its first performance at a Chinese music awards show in Beijing Tuesday evening.

Super Junior-M’s first album “Me,” features Chinese versions of Super Junior’s hit songs such as “U,” “Marry U,” and “Don’t Don.”

Super Junior-M is composed of five members from Super Junior, namely Si-won, Dong-hae, Kyu-hyun, Ryeo-wook and Han-geng, and new Chinese members Henry and Zhou Mi. The “M” in Super Junior-M refers to Mandarin, the main Chinese language.

Han-geng, who is the only Chinese member in the original Super Junior, was recently chosen by the Olympics Organizational Committee to participate in the carrying of the Olympic torch in Beijing in August.

Henry, who plays the violin, has already appeared in Super Junior’s music video for “Don’t Don.”

The creation of a unit group is part of SM Entertainment’s “localization” strategy for the Asian market. It hopes the inclusion of the Chinese members into the Super Junior group will help make the group more popular in China.

However, Korean fans of Super Junior have vehemently protested SM Entertainment’s plans to include more Chinese members. Fans have staged protest rallies in front of the company’s office in Cheongdam-dong, and have even created online petitions against the plan.

Super Junior, which has 13 members, has already spawned two unit groups in the past. Super Junior- K.R.Y. and Super Junior T focused on different genres of music. K.R.Y. released ballad songs, while Super Junior T focused on making trot music more accessible to the younger generation.

Fans Give Shinhwa Members Surprise Gift

‘Shinhwa Must Go On 10th Anniversary Live,’ a special concert marking the 10th anniversary of Shinhwa’s debut, was held at the Fencing Stadium at the Seoul Olympic Park. After the three-and-an-half-hour performance, including encore numbers, Shinhwa members got ready to step off the stage when a large screen installed on the stage began showing a video interview of close friends of Shinhwa who had shared the ups and downs with the members during the past ten years. Shinhwa members, who were completely taken off-guard by the surprise video screening, sat on the stage and watched the video. Deeply touched by the words of their closest friends, members openly shed tears. The group was then presented with a cake with a single candle in the shape of the number ten. Fans and Shinhwa, all moved to tears, sang ‘happy birthday’ together. The concert will be the last performance for Shinhwa members for the next three years as members Eric and Kim Dong-wan will soon begin their military services. The event was a memorable and touching affair for Shinhwa members, their fans and members of the group’s management company.

SG WannaBe Ranks 10th on Japanese Oricon Chart

APopular male vocal group SG WannaBe’s debut album in Japan entitled ‘I Love SG WannaBe’ has kicked off to a favorable start by landing on the 10th spot on the Japanese Oricon Chart’s daily album chart.On March 20, the group held a special event in Odaiba, Tokyo to celebrate the release of its first album in Japan. Some one thousand fans flocked to meet the members of the group, who held a handshaking event as well as a talk show.Member Chae Dong-ha shocked many fans by officially announcing that he will be leaving SG WannaBe to begin a solo career. He asked his fans to continue to support his future career. The group members went on to announce the top five songs chosen by Japanese fans and gave a live performance of the song which took the number one spot–‘Partner for Life,’ included in the group’s third studio album. The event came to a close when the members took photos with the fans. On March 20th, SG WannaBe’s official Japanese website announced that Chae Dong-ha will be leaving the group to pursue his dream to become an actor. The original members of SG WannaBe will hold another fan meeting on May 7 and perform together for the final time at two concerts to be held at the Tokyo International Forum’s A Hall on May 8.

Super Junior`s Han Kyung to Carry Olympic Torch

SM Entertainment Agency announced that there was an online survey done by Coca-Cola China, a public sponsor of the Beijing Olympics (http://www.icoke.cn), and Han Kyung of Super Junior was voted first place as carrier of the 2008 Olympics torch. After deliberations, the Olympics organizational committee sealed the deal.

“The [Olympics] committee chose Han Kyung because they recognized his part in the cultural exchange of China through his activities in Korea and the rest of Asia,” the agency stated. “Han Kyung will be participating in the carrying of the Olympic torch in Beijing from August 6th to the 8th.”

Han Kyung will be taking his solemn oath at the “Coca-Cola National Olympic Torch-Bearer Ceremony” as a representative of the Olympic flame on the 24th in China. The ceremony will be broadcast on CCTV-5 and Guangdong TV, the official Chinese channels for the 2008 Olympics.

Han Kyung stated, “I’m extremely pleased and honored to be a torch-bearer for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.”

Shinhwa Members Celebrate 10th Anniversary of their Debut

The group Shinhwa recently filmed a music video for their 9th studio album. The music video was filmed in a field of reeds near a dinosaur fossil site in Songsan-myeon in Hwaseong City, Gyeonggi Province.

The scene involved five members rescuing Eric, who is held as a hostage by enemy gangsters.

March 24 marks the 10th anniversary of Shinhwa’s debut. The music video shoot was a special event as members Eric and Kim Dong-wan are preparing to begin their military services.

The members said the past decade felt more like a brief thunderstorm and thanked each other for staying the same over 10 years.

Jun Jin said he feels sad to watch his “brothers” go off to the miliary before him while Andy remarked that when he is hanging out with the group members, it feels as same as it did ten years ago.

After the release of their album, Shinhwa will hold a 10th anniversary concert after which the members will go their separate ways.

The group joked around by saying that in ten years all of the members will probably be married. They added, however, that even after ten years, they will be together, and if they had an opportunity to travel back ten years, they would choose to be a part of Shinhwa all over again.

BoA and TVXQ, Natural-Born Singers (March 13, 2008)

Yoo Young-jin, singer-turned-songwriter for SM Entertainment’s singers, was full of praise for BoA and TVXQ.

In a recent interview with Yonhap News Agency, Yoo was asked which pop artist had displayed remarkable growth and potential. He answered, “I believed BoA to be unique even as I gave her “ID: Peace B,” her debut song…When I brought her the demo tape, the song was still rough and a bit unclear but at the recording three days later, she sang it with such clarity. It turned out better than I had originally imagined.”

He went on to explain that BoA had a “keen sense” when interpreting a musical piece. “She knows when to add rhythm and where the song needs to be sped up in tempo. Even now, BoA continues to grow,” he added.

During recording sessions with TVXQ, Yoo Young-jin said that he could “sense how much contemplation the boys put into their music.”

He commented, “[They] only have a week-long break during the year as they work in Korea and Japan. It’s exhausting but their vocal skills have grown exponentially in relation to their age.”

Kangta to Release New Album Before Joining Military

Pop singer Kangta, who was at the forefront of the Korean Wave which swept Asia, will take a break from the entertainment business to finish his compulsory military service.

Kangta’s agency SM Entertainment said Monday that he will release his first new album in three years around the middle of this month before joining the military on April 1.

Having focused on working in China by forming the pop duo Kangta & Vanness with Taiwanese singer Vanness Wu, acting in dramas and appearing at various award shows, the former member of now-disbanded boy band H.O.T. is expected to please local fans with the new album of ballads.

Kangta will also hold a solo concert at Yonsei University on March 29 to celebrate the album’s release. Because it is his first solo performance in five years and his last before joining the military, it will likely draw great attention from fans not only in Korea but also in other Asian nations such as China and Japan.

Tickets will be available through Internet shopping mall Auction (ticket.auction.co.kr) from Thursday at 8:00 p.m.

The singer plans to appear in several music programs to promote his album and meet his fans as much as possible before joining the military.
